MEDIA MOGUL WORKFLOW PROVIDES PLATFORM FOR GROWTH IN MAGAZINE PUBLISHING
Date of News : 25/04/2006
Mortons Media Group, specialists in heritage transport magazines, has installed Picdars Media Mogul Workflow solution. Andrew Savage, Production Manager at Mortons says, Within only a few months from implementation we experienced a quantum leap in time and cost savings in production management, happier editorial teams and a ten-fold growth in syndication.

Doug Shaw, ICT Manager from Mortons will be explaining how Media Mogul has helped them to eliminate hidden costs by streamlining their publishing workflows at Publishing Expo at Olympia on 27 April at 12:15 in Theatre 1.

Media Mogul Workflow is a flexible workflow solution developed by award-winning workflow and digital asset management company, Picdar. Its introduction marks a step-change in the way that any publisher can now organise and control its production workflow. Media Mogul Workflow allows publishers to concentrate on the business of producing and selling excellent content. It introduces long overdue cost efficiencies into the magazine production process without diminishing any of the joys of publishing, comments Lesley Steinitz, CEO Picdar.

With Picdars solution, Mortons now enjoys a common workflow throughout the production process from ingestion of text and images to print ready output. With Media Mogul I can see the status of the whole magazine, how ready it is and the location of any blockage, says Savage. Because Media Mogul ties all of the published content together, its installation has had a positive impact on growing interest in Mortons syndication and web publishing businesses. Production lead times are now accurate and, as perfectly illustrated by Mortons, makes it possible to acquire, expand and innovate with new magazines.

We added eight new titles and six one-shots over 2005. All came in easily. At even a rough estimate, because weve not had to increase staffing levels, weve almost doubled our output while maintaining our base line costs.

Picdars workflow solution maintains the idiosyncrasies of individual team working practices while providing a resilient and scaleable meta-structure for the control of assets. Users can now find the right material much faster than in the past. One of the many benefits of unifying our working practices with Media Mogul Workflow is that it is now possible for people to jump from one magazine to another and start working immediately, comments Andrew.

With Picdars Quark XTensions, users at Mortons can drive the system from within the Quark application but with the confidence that version control of each asset, page and issue is handled automatically by Media Mogul. Media Mogul Workflow is also available with In-Design XTensions.

A unique element of Picdar's technology is e-Loader, which strips attachments out of emails and loads them immediately into Media Mogul. Without this, someone has to waste a few minutes exporting and loading each piece of content emailed into the organisation. Over the course of a week, this soon adds up to many wasted working hours.

Currently Mortons publishes three or four magazines each week and the company is looking at further expansion. Says Andrew, We can expand the system at very little cost. It is just a matter of disk space to allow us to buy the next group of magazines. The most impressive benefit of using Media Mogul is that we can publish much more without having to increase the number of staff.

About Mortons Media Group

Mortons Media Group has a long history of understanding new technology and how it can bring major benefits and opportunities to its business. In 1968, when it was still a newspaper publisher, it was one of the first publishing houses in the country to forsake letterpress for web-offset and phototypesetting. Selling its Lincolnshire Independent Newspaper Group in 2001, Mortons moved out of local news production to concentrate on its national business as the leader in producing magazines for the British classic motor market. Its special emphasis is motorcycles, a sector for which it also runs the top three shows in the UK. It is now widening its field of interest in the classic motor sector.
